Every cat has their own adventuring style, needs, and abilities. You’ll figure out what works best for you and your cat. The most important questions to consider are:
- What will you be doing?
- What is easy for you to use?
- What does your cat like?
NOTE: Always make sure to check that pets are allowed where you’ll be going. While campgrounds generally allow pets, not all public lands do. Please be aware of and obey all leash ordinances.
This is a rough list to get you started if you’ve never taken your cat out and about before:
Hiking:
- Pet backpack or sling, unless they can ride comfortably on your shoulders or you’re able to carry them if they get tired
- Small training treats (and treat pouch)
- Longer lasting treat or chew for breaks (treat toys are a great option!)
- Pet-safe insect repellent spray (MUST specifically state that it is safe for cats)
- Collapsible water bowl
- Small safety lights for harnesses
- An extra collar with tag for each cat (and I have Tile Sports on both my kids)
- A first aid kit specifically for your cat
- Coat/Sweater/Raincoat depending on weather and temperature
- Poop bags
Camping/Backpacking:
- Pet backpack or sling if you’ll be hiking
- Treats (small training type treats as well as longer lasting chews)
- Pet-safe insect repellent spray (MUST specifically state that it is safe for cats)
- Collapsible water bowl
- Small safety lights for harnesses
- An extra collar with tag for each cat
- A first aid kit specifically for your cat
- A tent with room for your assorted cat paraphenalia
- Food and water bowls
- Grooming wipes, just in case (you can use them too!)
- Sweaters/coats/heat reflective bed if it will be cold, esp at night
- Raincoat if there’s a chance of rain
Extras (esp for car camping):
- Small scratching post or cardboard scratch pad
- A litter box (if your cat won’t go outside /or you don’t want to let them out to potty in the middle of the night.)
- Some sort of extra enclosure (or a tie-out, if you’re VERY confident)
- Toys
- A cooling pad if it’s going to be warm
